January can be a bit of a miserable month – after the festive cosiness of December, suddenly everyone’s on a diet, bank accounts are rattling and it seems a long way to summer. So to combat any January gloom, we’ve come up with five little positive things you can do to feel good…
1. Have a massive clear-out
It might be hard to sum up the motivation to tackle the wardrobe/spare room/attic, but trust us, once you get stuck in you’ll feel so good. Make three piles – things to keep (you might even rediscover favourite clothes or shoes that had gone missing!), things to throw away and things to donate. Make sure that everything you’re taking to the charity shop is clean and in good order. Not only will you create space for lovely new things in your home (we can help you with a few ideas there…), but something you donate might make someone else’s day when they spot it in the charity shop – and you’ll be helping a good cause earn a little more money. It’s a win/win!
2. Make a small change for a big difference
By the time January rolls around, it can feel like winter’s been here for ages – the windows are shut tight, the heating’s been on for months and the house can start to feel a bit stuffy. Add a lovely new scent to completely refresh the way your home feels – we’ve got a gorgeous selection of Priddy Essentials candles and diffusers, and particularly love the orange blossom for a delicious waft of summer scent. If grey days are getting you down, just close your eyes and you’ll be transported to sunny Seville.
3. Make some time for yourself
Christmas and New Year can be a bit hectic and noisy – and while it’s lovely to catch up with everyone and pack in plenty of treats, it can leave you needing a little quiet me-time in January. Whatever your favourite chill-out activity is, from taking a bubble bath to going out for a run, make some time in the day that’s just for you. Try and resist the temptation to take a book or plug in your headphones, as well – give yourself some peace and quiet to organise your thoughts.
4. Print out a few photos from Christmas & New Year
These days we take more photos than ever, but usually they stay tucked away in phones and computers where we just don’t see them very often. Take half an hour to look over all the photos you took with friends and family during the festive period, pick a few favourites and actually print them out. It might seem a bit old-fashioned but then you can put them somewhere you’ll see them every day! Check out our selection of beautiful photo frames for the finishing touch – we love Nkuku’s antique brass photo frames.
5. Get Cosy
Often January can be the coldest and most miserable month of the year, without even the prospect of Christmas to cheer you up – but instead of letting it get you down, embrace those dark winter nights and get your hygge on. We’ve got throws, blankets, cushions and everything else you need to snuggle up on the sofa and get stuck into a boxset. Spring will be here soon enough, so make the most of the winter to rest, relax and recharge.
And don’t forget…
6. Get excited for the year ahead
What are you going to do this year? 2018 is a blank canvas just waiting for you to fill it with exciting plans, and January is the perfect time to start. Your pockets might be feeling a bit light right now, but don’t let that get you down – instead, make a list of the things you want to save up for, make a plan and make a commitment to stick to it. Maybe there’s something you’ve always wanted to learn, a place you’ve always wanted to visit or simply something lovely that you’d really like to treat yourself to. Make a plan and by the end of the year, it could be yours!
