We are delighted to welcome our latest guest maker Katie Wallis to the Homefront fold. Katie has over ten years’ experience as a bespoke interior decorator and secured an MA in Multidisciplinary Print from UWE in 2012. To date, then she has been further developing a unique and quirky style that is simultaneously both intricate but aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Katie is currently heavily influenced and inspired by the geometry of the natural world.
Katie employs a range of techniques to achieve her desired effects which include, digital media and laser cutting, to flock work, foil and traditional printmaking, combining both up to the minute, and traditional mediums and skills. She also seeks to use wherever possible, organic fabrics to create her printing and objects. This is very much an encapsulation of the marriage between decorative art and utility seen in their functionality in an interior setting.
In store, we are currently stocking one of her major and latest projects in collaboration with one of our other guest makers, A Peculiar Grace Upholstery by Mel Shearsmith. The Queen Bee, a nursing chair, combines Katie’s signature bees and hexagons with some of her kaleidoscopic flowers and further geometric patterning in the fabric. This stylishly complements Mel’s fabulous upholstering which subscribes to a specific and delightful attention to detail, from covered springs and buttons to yellow gold piping with a deep teal velvet to underpin Katie’s unique design. This is their first collaboration and they hope to continue to produce combined and unique pieces of fabric and upholstery together in future.
We are also stocking some of Katie’s latest solo pieces which include her stunning geometric, patterned lampshades with gorgeous peacock blue geometry incorporating additional, honeybee motifs, complete with gold lining. The peacock theme is further repeated in stylish Indian Summer like cushions, depicting peacocks with emphasis on the geometry of their opulent tails. They are made with Shantung silk fabric at the front and backed with velvet in beautiful, blue hues. Homefront is thrilled to have Katie’s skill and talents in store and as part of the Homefront maker’s collective.
